What are indications of a serious neck injury?

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2023 | Injuries |

Neck injuries can happen due to many different causes, such as overstrain, an auto accident, or a workplace injury. Some neck injuries are minor and go away after a short while. However, in some instances a neck injury can lead to chronic problems and even disability.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes some signs that you may need medical attention after hurting your neck.

Lasting pain

Buying over-the-counter medicine from a local pharmacy is sometimes enough to quell and eliminate neck pain. However, the injury could be serious if the usual pain relievers do not work and the pain continues without interruption. Persistent pain, especially if it is severe, could necessitate a visit to a doctor.

Spreading pain

Serious neck injuries can have effects beyond the neck. Examples include headaches and pain that shoots down into the arms. Some people even suffer pain in their legs. Spreading pain could indicate that you have nerve problems or additional injuries elsewhere in your body.

Problems with sensation

The neck is where your spine connects with your brain, so an injury to your neck could damage the nerve signals that flow from your brain. Spine or nerve damage can show itself through weakness or tingling you feel in your limbs. More seriously, you might find you cannot feel sensations at all in certain parts of your body.

It is important to discover the full extent of your injury. You may prevent further and lasting damage. You could also determine your future medical costs, which might be an issue if you seek compensation from a party responsible for your injury.
