How can you reduce distracted driving?

On Behalf of | Dec 29, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Almost every driver in Georgia is guilty of distracted driving in one way or another. Texting or talking on the phone is one of the most common causes of distracted driving. However, there is a variety of other mundane tasks that can put you at risk.

What are some of the most common causes of distracted driving?

It may seem like second nature to glance down at your cellphone whenever you see an incoming call or text. Or petting your furry friend may seem innocent enough even when you’re behind the wheel. Unfortunately, distracted driving contributes to hundreds of accidents each day that could otherwise be avoided. Many of these accidents cause serious personal injury to all parties involved.

You can become distracted simply by reaching down to change the radio station or checking out a scenic view. Talking to passengers or adjusting your GPS can also lead to distracted driving.

How can you reduce distracted driving?

Like other drivers, your main concern is to get to your destination as safely as possible. There are several practical and easy steps you can take to reduce distracted driving. First, use your cellphone only in emergencies. If you must use your phone for a non-emergency reason, pull over to the side of the road. Keep in mind that hands-free devices can still cause distracted driving.

Second, never drive if you feel drowsy. Drowsiness can significantly increase your risk for a crash. If you feel tired, pull over as soon as you can.

Finally, refrain from eating while you’re driving. While eating in the car may seem like a time-saver, it could make you less attentive to others who are on the road.

Be proactive about driving without being distracted each time you get in the car. Your awareness could prevent a severe accident from happening. If you are hurt in a car accident, be sure to contact a personal injury attorney right away.
