Is distracted driving normalized in society?

Georgian residents likely spend a fair amount of time on the road. Though there are plenty of roadway dangers to be on the lookout for, some of the most common fall under the umbrella of distracted driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is a blanket term that includes many different dangerous driving behaviors. For example:

  • Texting while driving
  • Operating handheld electronics
  • Putting on makeup or doing your hair
  • Eating
  • Having involved discussions with other passengers

Distracted driving behaviors will take your mind, hands, and/or eyes off of the road. They are classified as extremely risky. In fact, texting while driving is beginning to rival driving under the influence as the top preventable reason for car crashes.

Unfortunately, some believe these behaviors are normalized in society due to the perception that "everyone" does them, and thus they "can't be that dangerous". This is especially relevant to texting while driving, which is particularly prevalent among younger drivers. Many claim that they or their friends have done it before and have been fine, and therefore continue to do so.

However, some studies have shown that even older drivers in their 20s, 30s or beyond have been guilty of texting while driving, or using handheld electronic devices in general. For this reason, widespread campaigns to bring awareness to the true dangers of distracted driving have been launched.

Have you been injured in a crash because of a driver who was not paying attention to the road? Consider contacting an attorney for help getting compensation for your damages.
