What are some safety tips for older drivers?

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2017 | Car Accidents |

The ability to drive is extremely important for many people in Marietta. However, as you get older, you may experience physical and cognitive changes that make driving more of a challenge. Many people are able to continue driving well into their seventies and eighties if they take a few precautionary measures. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the road as you age.

Distracted driving is a problem for drivers of all ages. In order to avoid having to take your eyes off of the road while you are driving, the Mayo Clinic recommends planning your itinerary before you leave the house. By putting the address into your phone or GPS ahead of time, you will not have to fiddle with them while you are behind the wheel.

Going to the doctor regularly also plays an important part in your continued ability to drive. Identifying and treating any problems or illnesses before they become major issues can help keep you on the road longer. Be sure to ask about any medications you are taking and whether possible interactions could affect your ability to drive. In addition, regular exercise can help keep you strong and agile.

The type of car you drive may also be important as you get older. Many newer cars come equipped with safety technologies that reduce the need for you to turn your neck or react quickly. Certain models also have dashboards and instruments that are easier to read and seats that are easier to get in and out of. This is not intended as legal advice and is provided only as general information on this topic.
