Harsher penalties recommended for speeders to cut traffic deaths

If you have ever been driving on one of Georgia's many highways and seen a car come blazing past you going well over the speed limit, you know how dangerous fast drivers can be. Yet, many drivers choose to ignore the law and put themselves and others on the road in danger. At Sams, Larkin, Huff & Balli, LLP, we understand that a motor vehicle crash has huge consequences for those who are injured, as well as for their families.

A new study conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board has led the agency to recommend more stringent penalties for speeding drivers, according to Curbed. Statistics show that an equal number of fatal accidents are caused by those who are speeding and those who are under the influence of alcohol.

If you are convicted of a DUI, you will have your license suspended and probably be subject to some hefty fines. Yet, a speeding conviction would not impact your life in nearly the same way. There is also a social stigma associated with a DUI conviction that does not exist for those who speed.

Research has shown that the faster a driver is going when a crash occurs, the more severe the injuries sustained in the crash are likely to be. That is why some think that speed limits should be changed. Most speed limits were set a long time ago and were based on the speed of average drivers and not made with the safety of those on the road in mind.
